MEMORY 01

MEMORY Sorry I gave your universe cancer (Significant Negative)
GAINED Day 166, Queen of Hearts Game
FORM Raspberry Tarts 3/4

The memory is of him sitting in a room having a one-sided conversation on a chat client with someone who isn't there; it's clear from the memory her name is Jade, but not much else. The part he's remembering begins here and ends here.

For context (not part of the memory), at this point he's just witnessed the deaths of several of his friends, and one of his best friends has gone insane, has been threatening to kill him, and sent him a note implying he has or will hurt Karkat's love interest. He's desperately trying to get in touch with Jade to finish the plans they're making, but because he can't, he's come to the conclusion that this is a doomed timeline (an offshoot from the main timeline, meaning everyone in it will die), and he confesses to Jade something he's guilty about even though she isn't there to respond. As part of the game the trolls played, they created the human universe by breeding frogs, but Karkat rushed through that part and the human universe was flawed. This flaw (or cancer) caused the existence of Bec Noir, a being that will both destroy the human universe and attempt to hunt down and kill the trolls. However, Karkat will only remember the conversation itself, not the contextual details, so he will be as lost as anyone reading a random excerpt of the Homestuck plot.

The relevant points of this that he'll take away is that some sort of disaster has happened that has caused a lot of people he doesn't know to die, someone named Gamzee is crazy and it's his fault, and he was somehow involved in giving a universe cancer because of a fuck-up with frogs. He'll also recognize the name Jade, and since he knows Rose and Dave played the same game, he's likely to assume the universe he was apologizing for was theirs.

EFFECTS This is a really depressing memory just based on the emotions he was experiencing when it happened. Karkat won't understand most of what is happening or what the hell he's talking about, but this is a memory of him sitting and waiting to die, knowing that some or all of whoever he is there with have already died, feeling as though no hope is left, and experiencing incredible guilt and certainty that everything was his fault.

He will probably keep this memory under wraps; he won't want anyone to know how badly he fucked up. But while he'll try to shake it off as not a big deal, it's a pretty confidence shattering thing to experience, and it will confirm his suspicion that he's probably an awful person who has a lot to prove.
